3 Ways to Reclaim Your Focus

Living in this modern world does not make it easy to stay focused. We all have a device in hand or right next to us 24/7. There are messages coming in from multiple platforms, emails, phone calls and the ability to surf the internet. Even if you’re not that connected to the digital world, you are. There’s no escaping it … unless you don’t have a device at all.
I’m not really here to talk about technology and distraction today. I thought it was the easiest way to point out how distracted we can be. What I’d like to talk about today is noticing how you might be distracted in other ways. Ways that may keep you from being your best and/or doing your best. Things that are so natural, that you don’t even notice them. They may be habitual ways of being that are not serving you well.
There are just 3 things that I have here that will hopefully bring more awareness to your day as you are working on being your best self, staying healthy and living with an open mind and heart.
1. Are you focusing on things you can control or things that are out of your control? I think we all are familiar with the prayer, “Please grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change. The courage to change the things I can. And the wisdom to know the difference.” This is exactly what I’m talking about. Are things that are out of your control creating distractions that are taking you off of your ‘A game’? You can control your perspective and how you see something that is out of your hands. This is where your power is.
2. Are you focused on the past, present or future? Living in the past is never a good thing. Learning from the past is imperative. If you’re stuck in the past you have a hard time being in the present and planning for the future. It can often involve guilt, stress, lack and fear.
If you’re living in the future, you may struggle to be present. It often results in worrying about what will happen in the future (unless one of your top strengths is ‘futuristic’ like me), will there be enough, will this happen or will that happen. Worrying only helps to create the things you don’t want! Where your attention goes ~ energy flows.
Living in the present, in the here and now, is the most challenging place to be with all of our distractions. It’s also the most rewarding place, it’s a gift, and where you, ideally, want to spend the majority of your time. Doing ONE thing at a time is a great way to practice that.
3. Are you focused on all of the things you don’t like or don’t have OR focused on being grateful for everything you do have and are working towards? This is one of the biggest challenges in our everyday world. The art of complaining, as some have practiced it so much, it has become an art, is often the norm and we don’t always realize we’re even doing it. How often are you in gratitude? Do you have a gratitude practice or notice a specific time of the day that you find yourself being grateful? Maybe during a specific activity? I often find that when I’m either out in nature or driving my scooter that I’m filled with a sense of gratitude. I also have a daily gratitude practice.
I would suggest choosing ONE of these to work on if you can see yourself being distracted from your purpose, goal and mission in life. What will help you stay on track? Let me know in the comments below!
