How do YOU like to start the day?
I used to wake up FAMISHED in the morning. Breakfast was the first thing I did every day (that’s also how I broke almost all of my toes on one foot but we can save that story for another time) because I was so hungry AND sleepy (teen years)! It wasn’t a pretty or nourishing breakfast either. Full on S.A.D. (= Standard American Diet). There was definitely a long phase of cinnamon sugar toast = standard white bread, with a lot of butter (not a healthy kind at all, of course) and a LOT of sugar and cinnamon. How many slices? It often depended on how much time I had in the morning!!
Nowadays my breakfast routine has completely changed. I don’t ‘eat’ breakfast most of the time. I prefer to have a smoothie whenever I start getting hungry ~ usually somewhere between 11am and 1pm.
What do you eat for breakfast? DO you eat breakfast? What TIME do you have breakfast? Does your breakfast serve YOU?
From a U.S. perspective, most of our common ‘breakfast options’ are not even ‘real’ food. Processed cereal that comes in a box, frozen waffles, pop tarts and even granola bars >> these foods are filled with sugar, chemicals and preservatives. They are not nourishing but instead inflammatory.
I know this picture may look a bit extreme. Unfortunately it probably has the equivalent amount of sugar as cold processed cereal or pancakes/waffles (unless they are made in a healthy way). Starting your morning off with all of this sugar leads to just the beginning of your roller coaster ride with high/low blood sugar.
So … what should you eat in the morning? There are a slew of healthy and tasty options. There is no right or wrong as this is a very individual answer depending on your body type, nutrition needs, likes/dislikes, etc. Since it’s winter now (for most of you), warm whole-grain cereals are a wonderful, a bowl of miso soup with vegetables and/or rice, an avocado smash (are they in season?). If you need protein eggs, tempeh bacon, granola (nuts/seeds). Basically, REAL food.
If you struggle with what to eat for breakfast, you haven’t identified what foods serve you, let’s talk! I’d love to offer a complimentary discovery session to help you identify what foods might be best for you in the morning!
Please check my calendar below and choose 2 back-to-back sessions.
