Flexibility?!?

Now that we’re back in Sumbawa (picture below) and getting settled again, my workout routine is fantastic. The only thing that I have to come to terms with is …. I’m not NEARLY as flexible as I used to be. I can tell you exactly when that happened and what I’m doing about it now.

I just had to lead with the first picture because first of all, who really looks like this when they do the splits? Certainly NOT me 🙂 Definitely NOT recommended to do them on the beach in a skimpy bikini … sand in places …. well, you know. I used to watch tv sitting in the splits and was able to do them until I was in my early/mid – 40s. Then … I decided to become a health coach.
This involved traveling from Portland, OR to NYC 10 times over 8 months (if I remember correctly, this was in 2005). Needless to say, some of my healthy routines got lost with all of that traveling/studying, having a 4 y.o. as a single mom and being a self-employed homeowner. Not complaining at all, my plate was just full.
This is the place and time that I lost my easy/natural flexibility. I have come close a few times to getting it back … and have always lost it again. I’m on a mission, yet once again, to get back to my old ways. I know that this is possible as I’ve done it before.
What had an even bigger impact on me was when I lived in Japan. I wanted to practice Aikido. Going to the dojo was a bit intimidating for me as I was the only foreigner and the only woman. To top it off, they didn’t speak English and my Japanese was ‘survival’. Needless to say, I ended up trying to do tai chi in the park with a group of women. What I did get from my dojo visit was that these OLD Japanese men were sitting in the splits just like I used to when I was a kid. Anything is possible!

I know I can do it and that it will take consistent effort. I do yoga every day and at least one 7 minute HIIT workout as well as walks on the beach, swimming and a hike here and there. doTERRA’s Deep Blue Rub has become my new best friend ~ an amazing blend that helps sore muscles. I’m staying hydrated, using cold showers, self massage and the healing energy of the ocean to get through it all.

The most important thing is NOT being able to do the splits. The most important thing is that I am stretching (and hopefully you are or will be). If a stretch for you is touching your knees, then touch your knees. Maybe you shins, ankles or the floor. The location does NOT matter. Creating a stretch and expanding your flexibility is what is important.
Staying flexible physically can also help you remain flexible in your mind. Being open and flexible in the body can translate to being more open minded and adaptable in the heart and mind. Given the current state of the world (especially the USA), we could all benefit from a little more flexibility and understanding. In the end, we are all one.
What are you doing to stay more flexible? Is there something else that has ‘gotten away from you’ over the years? It’s never too late to work on regaining whatever it is that you desire. It may not look or be exactly the same because you are a completely different person from the old you (even from yesterday!). Comment below!

Oh the joy of flexibilty! I miss my Yoga class! It is time to take action and make it happen. I do not like video Yoga and I have been struggling in this pandemic because everything is video! What can I do? I can create my own routine at home — I have a patio area outside my bedroom that has enough space and is warmed by the morning sun. This would be a perfect place! I am excited! I have found my solution. Any suggestions on putting together a routine? I will try to remember my last class, which I loved so much, and pull some postures and I am open to any other suggestions.
I love downward dog, and Benny can lead that one! Tree pose is one of my favorites for balance. I am excited!
love to all

Deb! I’m so happy to hear that you found this inspiring. I understand the struggle with video yoga classes. They are not my favorite, but living on Sumbawa, I have learned to embrace them. You certainly can to your own free flow routine. I’m not a yoga instructor (yet), but I would suggest identifying what you’re looking for in a yoga practice. You can also tap into some of the basics, like sun salutation. Have fun with this!! ~ xo t
