The Power of an Onion

I think that we all know that onions and the other members of the onion family (garlic, shallots, leeks, etc) are good for our health. Is the onion powerful enough to keep you healthy during cold/flu season?
Nutritionally speaking, the onion has a lot going for it and it’s easy to add to most savory dishes. You might be surprised to learn that it has a lot of Vitamin C! It also has sulphuric compounds (which can make you cry when cutting them), flavonoids (powerful antioxidants & a type of phytochemical) and phytochemicals (come from plants and help protect the plant from invasion, disease and infection and ideally do something similar in your body). They are easy to cook with and can be used in so many different ways.
There are so many health benefits that may potentially come from eating onions:
- Good for your heart health
- Anti-inflammatory
- Boost your immune system
- Anti cancer
- Digestion
- Regulating blood sugar
- Bone density improvement in older women
I’m actually not writing today about the health and nutrition benefits of onions, though they are good to know about. I want to talk about some old wives tales regarding onions and the cold/flu season. They are both simple and can be fun to play with. Keep an open mind and remember, it’s just an onion … so why not try it? If nothing else, just for the fun of it.
The first way to use onions is by cutting them and putting them in your socks. I must confess that I have not tried this as I’m a fan of WET SOCKS (see my blog post on that here >> http://theholisticshabang.com/2020/02/13/wet-socks/). This is something you would do just as you’re getting into bed. I can’t imagine that you’d be interested in walking around your house with cut onions in your socks. Sounds horrible, right? Put cut onions into your socks so they’re at the bottom of your feet and go to bed. Easy as pie.
The second old wives tale involves cutting an onion in half, putting it in a bowl and then near your bed (under a nightstand or your bed). I’ve heard of some people adding a little hot water as well, but it’s not necessary. I’ve also heard of people who will put a cut onion in every room. The idea is that the onion will pick up any germs/bacteria that are in the air. While there is no scientific proof of this working to my knowledge, I know of many people and have read so many stories that share their success with this. Fevers and coughs going down significantly over night, congestion clearing, etc. Easy peasy. Is it just the placebo effect? Is there something to this?
This is why I love to play with natural remedies. If they work, fantastic . If they don’t work, there’s generally no harm and little to no money spent. Let me know if you try this and what your results are! Are there other natural remedies that you use during cold and flu season?
